Mr. Stevedore 20

Working at the port sure was awesome, and tiring too. It’s also the busiest port in the world, that I know. Cargo all around us, we made our way deep into the port early in the morning, had our passes made first then we proceeded on to wait. We had 12 guys in our group, Nash being the leader – Carrick, John Paul and Iqbal were with us too, along with several other familiar faces from RP. Ben was suffering over at the other team, he was chosen to go there because of a little argument with the agent. Work only officially started at 9am, despite having to wake up at 530am to get ready (and having the fortune of my father to fetch me there). We waited a long while outside the ship, which was a 6 stars luxurious cruise filled to the brim with the likes of British and Indian people.

While waiting outside, our dysfunctional boss even taught us the methods of “eating snake” too. It seems like he doesn’t really give a crap about what we really do in the ship, and wants us to have a blast doing so. Anyway, we started out on the top deck , on the sixth floor I think. There were some props and furniture that were needed to be brought over from the theater over to a cargo container (which was forklifted onto the deck of the ship). It was a good workout alright, most of the props needed at least 2 or people to carry, pretty much hard labour if you ask me. But then again, we fooled around and had a good time as well, playing around with some of the stage props and all.

We thought our job was finished after the last few pieces of props were loaded into the container. But no, another container came down onto the deck shortly after we had our break. We rested for some 10 minutes or so, fooling around in the staff room, everyone making coffee and tea for themselves. Amidst the searing heat on the deck, we had to start unloading now, which took another hour or so with the job split among 12 of us and a handful of Indian workers. We went down to the cafeteria for lunch after we were done, it was around 1pm then. Didn’t take long for us to finish and get back to the top deck, but we soon found out that we were already done for the day..

Nash, our leader, was supposed to make contact with the other group’s leader. The other group assumed that we were still doing our work, and Nash was pretty much calling the shots for our group. So we kept hush and slacked around the deck. Not much people walked past here, the guests would have better things to do then exploring the top deck of the ship. They practically slept for the next 2 to 3 hours. Literally, lying flat on the wooden floor. 12 of us lying flat along the hallway leading leading to and from the deck and the backstage theater. I didn’t really get much sleep, I didn’t want to dirty myself so I just leaned against the wall. Obviously that couldn’t grant as much sleep but I took whatever I could. The corridor was really quiet then, lifeless bodies littering the place, of all shapes and sizes from huge to small. Well, we really did a lot of work back there. I could feel all my major muscle groups aching after that, even better than a gym session.

They started to awake one by one as the hours pass. It was pretty damn boring TBH, but I was mostly talking to Carrick about games and stuff. They seemed to love the notion of being paid $7 an hour to sleep – they kept going on and on about it. We went back down to the cafeteria at about 4pm. Downed a few of those éclairs myself, damn those were really sweet and tasty. We also happened to run into the leader for the hour group, who were all slugging their asses off at the dry and cold stores below. He came over and asked “So work tiring anot?” We just said “Yeah, damn tired la”, and gave our novelty look of tiredness like as if we had just moved a tonne of cargo with our bare hands but in fact we just awoke from a long sleep. We gave some smirks here and there, I had almost wanted to burst out laughing when he left.

Evening was approaching and we kinda felt bad. We couldn’t really lie forever, and the guy had somehow found out that we were done already – through second guessing or whatnot, but we couldn’t lie to him anymore. So we went down all the way to the bottom of the ship, to the dry store to help out the rest of the guys. We were mainly just tasked to move cartons of food from one place to another. It was pretty fun actually, because we were surrounded by all sorts of food and beverages. People like us would definitely want to exploit the ship’s rations. Like once when we were tired we would just go to one corner of the store (it’s like a warehouse maze filled to the brim with foodstuffs), grab a bottled drink along the way, take a few gulps then hide it at another position. Nash has been doing so for a long time, although I didn’t take anything out of the ship with me, I watched where and how they actually found their chocolates and smuggle them out.

We had to do 30 minutes of OT, dismissed just before the sky started turning dark. We then made our way to Harbourfront for dinner first, walked around at Vivo for  a bit then made our way to Patricia’s place for the 4/2 gathering. Met up with Weijie, Xin Kai and Reuben before heading over to the party. We were kinda late then, only stayed there for an hour or so then we had to go back. Well, didn’t do much there actually. Although I some multiplayer action (FF Tactics) with Weijie. Walked with Ed and Dewei later that night, walked Dewei to his house then we continued on to walk out of CCK. There weren’t any buses at that time so we took a taxi back.

Yeah, It was a fun day. Saturday was something else, but that’s an entirely whole story that’s going to span another 500 words but I’m going to cut to the chase . Went to town with Edward in the evening, walked around for a bit then we had dinner. He had wanted to get one of them masks the Jabba WockeeZ use, lol. Anyway, we went down to Zouk later at night. Yet another clubbing session, 3rd time this year so far. Met up with Celeste and Yvonne, bought the tickets first then headed over to Mac to wait. Needless to say, we stayed there until finish. Didn’t do much drinking, neither could we compare to Celeste and her other friends. Basically just danced all night long, until Phuture closed. We were just dancing around our group of girls for most part, protecting them from any one else who would try to outrage their modesty. There were some irritating guys, a bunch of fresh NS dudes (from their hair) and some gay guy who tried to grind me. Feet was sore as shit by the end of the day, I was busying myself experimenting out some leg movements on the dance floor, lol.

Didn’t sleep until 6am that day, awoke some 6 hours later. And yeah, I’ve been just bumming around and writing this post since then. Well, my shingles have subsided and the skin is beginning to heal (all the blisters burst). Soon I’ll be going down to swim once more and probably shoot more hoops too. Just rained so I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere for now..
